The Upgrade That Changes Everything
A basement bathroom turns a finished basement from a nice room into a complete living space. Guest suites need one. Home offices are better with one nearby. And if you're finishing the basement as a long-term suite for family, a bathroom isn't optional — it's the whole point. We design and build full and half baths below grade, tied into your home's plumbing properly and finished to match the rest of the house.

How Below-Grade Plumbing Works
Everything in a basement bathroom comes down to one question: where's your main sewer line relative to the basement floor?
Gravity drainage (the easy case). If your home's main drain line exits below the basement floor level — common in homes with deep basements — new bathroom plumbing ties in by gravity, just like upstairs. Toilet, shower, and sink drains slope down to the main. Straightforward, reliable, and the least expensive way to add a basement bath.
Ejector pump systems (the common case). If the main sewer line is above the basement floor — very common in our area, especially in homes with shallow basements or where the sewer exits at grade — wastewater can't flow uphill on its own. The solution is a sewage ejector system: drains collect in a sealed basin below the floor, and a grinder or effluent pump lifts the waste up to the main line. These systems are proven, code-approved, and run for years with minimal maintenance. The basin gets sealed properly (no odors, no moisture), and we install an alarm so you know if the pump ever needs attention.
During your free estimate, we locate your main line, determine which case you're in, and quote accordingly. No guessing.
Full Bath vs. Half Bath
Half bath (toilet + sink): the most common basement addition. Enough for guests, office use, and everyday convenience. Smaller footprint, lower cost, simpler plumbing.
Full bath (toilet + sink + shower or tub): what a guest suite or rental-style suite needs. More plumbing, more space, more cost — but it completes the basement as independent living space.
Rough-in now, finish later: if your budget is tight, we can install the below-grade plumbing rough-in during the initial finish and complete the bathroom later. The expensive part — breaking concrete and running pipe — is done once, correctly, while the floor is open.
What's Included
- Layout and design integrated with your overall basement finish
- Below-grade plumbing: gravity tie-in or ejector pump system, properly vented
- Waterproofing verification around the bathroom area (showers and below-grade plumbing demand a dry space)
- Tile or surround shower/tub, toilet, vanity, and fixtures at your chosen finish level
- Exhaust ventilation vented to the exterior — non-negotiable in a basement bath, where humidity has nowhere else to go
- Lighting, GFCI protection, and all electrical to code
- Permits and inspections — plumbing below grade gets inspected, and you want it to be
The Moisture Conversation
Bathrooms add humidity to the space that can least afford it. That's why every basement bathroom we build includes proper exhaust ventilation to the exterior, moisture-resistant materials in wet areas, and — before any of it — verification that the basement itself is dry. A bathroom in a damp basement is a mold project with tile on it. If there's a moisture issue, our sister company Baseline Waterproofing handles the waterproofing side first.
What It Costs
A basement half-bath addition typically runs several thousand dollars; a full bath with shower runs higher, and ejector pump systems add to the cost versus gravity drainage. The honest variables: your plumbing layout, the fixtures you choose, and whether it's part of a larger finish (bundling saves money — the concrete's already open, the trades are already on site). Your free estimate gives you the real number for your basement.
